Meeting Objectives

  1. Promote understanding and use of modern measurement theories and related techniques in research and development efforts across many fields (including mental health, disability studies, substance abuse, patient satisfaction and so on), with a principal focus on chronic health conditions.
  2. Develop comprehensive educational programs and materials that promote the application of modern measurement.
  3. Provide educational opportunities to maintain and increase the knowledge and skills of researchers who are interested in applying measurement in health services research, healthcare delivery, and disease and disability management.
  4. Provide ideas and methods to extend the capacity and utility of patient-reported outcomes for monitoring chronic conditions and providing optimal interventions and support to individuals and groups.
  5. Provide forums for conversations and activities that promote the use of modern measurement techniques, develop and share information about measurement priorities, identify potential areas of collaboration in a variety of substantive areas, and exchange ideas about ways to make objective measurement technology more useful to professionals serving people with chronic conditions.

Meeting Description

The International Conference on Outcomes Measurement: Focus on Chronic Health Conditions will be hosted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The conference will be held just outside of Washington D.C., at the Bethesda, Maryland campus of the NIH Natcher Conference Center.

Morning plenary sessions will feature experts in outcome measurement discussing the role of measurement in managing chronic health conditions. Expertise of the presenters spans many healthcare and related fields focused on helping people cope with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Afternoon breakout sessions will feature concurrent tracks focusing on technical applications and philosophical/theoretical issues related to measuring patient-reported outcomes. Ample time will be allowed for discussion of issues with faculty and other speakers.

The NIH Natcher Conference Center is located within a brief walk of the Medical Center Metro station. There are numerous hotels on the Red Line servicing this station, and several hotels are within walking distance of the NIH Campus. The Natcher facility contains numerous meeting rooms and several auditoriums. A pleasant cafeteria and sandwich shop provide visitors with a variety of meals and snacks.
